The Providence Specialist Hospital (PSH) is located at No. 3 Purple Avenue in Achimota, suburb of Accra, the Capital City of Ghana.

Providence Specialist Hospital is Ghana’s first cardiothoracic center, currently the only private Hospital within the country to successfully perform an open heart surgery.

Providence is a specialist Hospital designed to make specialist care available so that potential clients would avoid catastrophic spending for health care abroad.

PSH is the only Heart center in Ghana that is adequately resourced in terms of infra-structure, equipment and manpower that can operate on patient, from children less than 10kg in weight to adult.

Out-patient Department (OPD) The OPD is well equipped to undertake all routine and specialized cardiothoracic as well as orthopaedics investigations: • X -rays • ECG • Echocardiography • Holter • Stress test • Ultrasonography.

The cardiothoracic team is led by Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, a world class cardiothoracic and vascular and transplant surgeon. He established the Cardiothoracic Centre in Korle – Bu Teaching Hospital and became its founding director.


Dr. Paul Ofori-Atta, an orthopaedic surgeon practiced for many years at West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust. His special interests are in Knee / Hip Primary and Revision Arthroplasty. He is a member of the British Orthopaedics Association as well as World Orthopaedics Concern.

Dr. Ofori-Atta also supports Motec Life - UK, a charity that provides educational, training and health care services to the underprivileged people of the West African subcontinent.

Cardiac Technology:

The Technical Team is led by Rodger Godson Okpara, MCT, ECCP the Cardiopulmonary and Renal Technologist. He was educated and trained in extracorporeal circulation systems in Scandinavia. He is a Researcher and Lecturer at Durban University of Technology, South Africa and University of Ghana respectively

Dr. Kwasi Ofori-Anti is one of the pioneers of Emergency Medicine in Accra. He has a rich experience in clinical practice, mentoring and training. He is part of the group of Consultants and Specialists who started Providence Specialist Hospital. He is a quality ambassador with a certificate from Harvard’s Institute of Healthcare Improvement Open School with a strong passion for improvement of healthcare delivery in Ghana.

Operating Theatre Suite

The hospital has two operating rooms that are equipped to allow the performance of complex heart and other operations. PSH is a health facility with two laminar Flow Operating theatres

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation:

PSH is the only hospital with an Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) equipment. Highly portable, the Cardio help System can be rapidly deployed for transport of patients requiring respiratory and / or circulatory support

Intra-aortic Balloon Pump (Iabp):

At PSH there are two IABPs. Basically, the intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) is a mechanical device that increases oxygen supply to the heart muscle and indirectly increases performance of the heart.

Medical Gases:

PSH has its own medical gases (oxygen and compressed air) production and also has additional capacity to fill cylinders.
